Clwyd Badger Group has rescued a severely injured badger following a road traffic collision in North Wales, in what volunteers have described as one of the most distressing incidents they have attended.
The badger was struck by a vehicle during a morning commute and became trapped in the car’s front bumper. Unaware at first that the animal was lodged in the vehicle, the driver travelled nearly five miles before discovering the badger still alive and in an extremely weakened state, once they arrived at work.
When volunteers arrived on scene, the animal had suffered significant injuries, including the loss of several areas of skin, a wounded neck and suspected bone damage. The badger was in considerable pain and very subdued.
Dan Rose of Clwyd Badger Group, who carried out the rescue, said:
“It was an awful situation to be in. We managed to catch the badger very easily as he was clearly in a lot of pain. We’re grateful for members of the public who report things to us as swiftly as they can. A horrible situation for the driver but we very much appreciate that the correct thing was done, they stayed by the badger to make sure it didn’t get away and phoned to get professional help.”
The group has praised the driver for remaining at the scene and contacting rescuers immediately once the situation became clear. Quick reporting can make a critical difference in animal welfare outcomes and ensures incidents are properly recorded.
Clwyd Badger Group is urging anyone who hits or discovers a badger following a collision anywhere across North Wales to report it as soon as possible. Even where a badger has sadly already died, reports remain vital.
Dan Rose added:
“Any time a badger is hit across North Wales please do report to Clwyd Badger Group to make us aware. We record every RTA report even if that badger is already dead. This data is used to collect suitable badgers to have tested for bovine TB and also checked for malicious intent.”
All road traffic incidents involving badgers contribute to important monitoring work. Recorded data supports disease surveillance, including testing for bovine tuberculosis, and helps identify any patterns of deliberate harm.
